The UN Resident Coordinator System

The Resident Coordinator system is hosted by UNDP and funded through resources raised by UNDP, UN Development Group and with contributions from agencies. The UN is headed by the Resident Coordinator (RC), who is the designated representative of the UN Secretary-General for development operations at the country level.

The RC system aims to bring together all UN agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of collective UN activities. It supports national development efforts by coordinating activities within the UN family and between the UN and its development partners, donors, civil society, the private sector and the Government of Malawi.

The RC system responds to the requirements of the UN Reforms in promoting simplification and harmonization of programmes and operational activities of the UN. The RC also promotes and advocates the UN global agendas of change in Malawi.

As the key UN counterpart of national governments, the RC draws together the global expertise, skills and best practices from the programmes, funds and specialised agencies of the UN. This meets the goals of the Resident Coordinator system to encourage the UN 'to work as one' with increasingly self-reliant host governments and active private sector and civil society groups. The scoring tactics include joint advocacy, programme and operational coordination, and move to common services and common premises.
