The target date – 2015 – is fast approaching. We are now past the half way point to this date, which was set for attaining MDGs, the world’s time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in diverse dimensions - income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion - while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability.
The goals are about basic human rights - the rights of every woman, man and child in Malawi to health, education, shelter and security as pledged in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Millennium Declaration.
They are based on a global partnership, stressing the responsibilities of developing countries to take responsibility for effective and accountable development efforts, and of developed countries for supporting those efforts. They have unprecedented political support, embraced at the highest levels by developed and developing countries, civil society and major development institutions alike.
Millennium Development Goals can be achievable. To ensure MDGs are an integral part of national priorities, United Nations;

• Tracks progress of MDGs in the country
• Assists the Government to develop policies and improving national capacity to implement development efforts
• Collaborates with development partners to enhance momentum in the country
• Provides assistance to address constraints to progress

In Malawi, our vision is to be the Government’s principal partner in supporting the alignment of Malawi’s development resources behind a results-oriented, MDG-based national development plan.
